EV charger installation: what's involved and what it costs

Thinking about a home charge point? Here's the whole picture in plain English — the process, the charger choices, the smart-charging rules, the grants, and what it actually costs in Essex.

The short answer

A standard home EV charger installation — a 7kW unit fitted close to your fuse box — typically costs £900–£1,300. Add roughly:

  • £150–£300 for a cable run up to about 10 metres
  • £400–£650 for a long run to the far side of the property
  • a little extra for a tethered (fixed-cable) unit over an untethered one

The charger model you choose and whether your supply needs any upgrade also affect the final figure — all confirmed in a free, fixed quote.

What's involved

A proper install is more than bolting a box to the wall:

  • Supply & load assessment — we check your incoming supply and fuse board can take a charger (and arrange any upgrade if not).
  • Siting — agreeing the best spot for where you actually park, and the tidiest cable route to it.
  • Installation — a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, the charger mounted and connected, with the right protection.
  • Testing & handover — commissioned, tested, app set up, and certified.

See the full EV charger installation service for what's covered.

Tethered or untethered?

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached — convenient, just plug in, but you're committed to one connector type. An untethered unit is a socket you bring your own cable to — neater on the wall and more future-proof if you change car. Both are good; it's convenience versus flexibility.

Smart chargers and the rules

Since mid-2022, new home charge points sold in the UK must be smart by law — meaning they can schedule charging for cheaper off-peak hours and be controlled from an app. That's a good thing: charging overnight on an EV tariff is far cheaper than topping up at peak times. Every unit we fit meets the current regulations.

Grants

The EV chargepoint grant gives up to £350 towards an installation if you live in a flat or in rented accommodation. Homeowners in standard houses are no longer eligible, but the install is quick and simple either way.

How long does it take?

Most installations are done in a few hours — typically a half-day. Longer cable runs or a supply upgrade can extend that, and we'll tell you up front if so.
